About this blog: The why behind “How can we do this better?”

About me:

One arena where I always think I can do better yet struggle to see how is in telling anyone a little something about myself. Descriptions always seem incomplete, labels confining—helpful handles as they may be. Here are some lists instead.

Some things I have done in no particular order:

  • Lived in New York City (thanks to my parents, who bought their Queens apartment in the 1980s for a four figure amount)
  • Gotten a driver’s license (see the first item for why this makes the list)
  • Studied Spanish, Japanese, Latin, and German without becoming proficient in any of them
  • Served a year as an AmeriCorps*VISTA – Class of 2007
  • Achieved my childhood dream of becoming a writer and getting published (although perhaps I should have been more specific as I have been a development writer, grant writer, and curriculum writer, but never published any creative writing beyond college—oh wait, what is this list about again?)
  • Helped create the Uncommon Athlete
  • Binge watched Chuck on repeat
  • Pet a Beluga whale at the Mystic Aquarium (ruining all future business trips ever)
  • Tried and failed to pop a wheelie on my bike (I did succeed in spraining my wrist)
  • Learned how to play the clarinet (twice, because apparently I learned incorrectly the first time)
  • Started an environmental club with my best friend in seventh grade (highest membership: 3)
  • Volunteered as a tour guide for the Vander Ende-Onderdonk House
  • Spent a summer as a Project Health Care “redcoat” at Bellevue Hospital
  • Presented on feedback loops, sharing information, and a creating a learning culture at the 2017 Nonprofit Technology Conference — and also facilitated a session on community engagement
  • Put together a playlist based on asking members of NTEN’s Nonprofits and Data online community group (which I co-organize) what their walk-up songs would be (mine would be Billy Idol’s “Dancing with Myself” in case you were wondering)
  • Taught a course on data management to nonprofit professionals
  • Heard Jukebox the Ghost, Ben Folds, Andrew Bird, J. Roddy Walston & The Business, The Punch Brothers, Guster, The Revivalists, Jamison & Double O Soul, Kat Parsons, Carly Harvey, Danae Suarez, and Florence & The Machine in concert
  • Heard Lucille Clifton, Sharon Olds, Derek Walcott, Denise Levertov, Tony Hoagland, Toi Dericotte, Yona Harvey, Salman Rushdie, Jeff Hammond, and Michael Glaser read their work in person
  • Made friends for life at St. Mary’s College of Maryland
  • Visited Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Seattle, Davis, San Francisco, Houston, Montreal, Hong Kong, Phuket, Key West, Savannah, London, Bath, Macao, Buffalo, St. Augustine, Prague, Nuremberg, Bamberg, Munich
  • Gone swimming with bioluminscent comb jellies in the St. Mary’s River (and yes, it is as magical as it sounds)
